State averages 2026: TAS $25,423, national $38,252, VIC $39,502, NSW $42,322.

How does NSW compare to other Australian states?

The three published 2026 state averages place NSW at $42,322, Victoria at $39,502 and Tasmania at $25,423, against a national average of $38,252.

State2026 average2025 averageChange
NSW$42,322$38,566+$3,756
Victoria$39,502$37,128+$2,374
National$38,252$35,315+$2,937
Tasmania$25,423$28,427-$3,004

New South Wales sits $2,820 above Victoria, and $16,899 above Tasmania. The 2025 Easy Weddings report had NSW already leading at $38,566, so the gap did not appear in 2026 - it widened. The NSW rise of $3,756 year on year outpaced the national rise of $2,937 over the same period.

Tasmania moved the other way, dropping $3,004 from 2025 to 2026. The spread between the most and least expensive published state went from $10,139 in 2025 to $16,899 in 2026 - that is a larger gap than the combined average spend on photography, flowers and the wedding dress together.

What does the national starting budget mean for NSW couples?

Most Australian couples begin with a budget of $29,471 and finish the wedding about 23 percent above it, landing near the national average of $38,252. In NSW, where the average is $42,322, the same overshoot pattern applies to a higher baseline.

The arithmetic: a couple who starts at $29,471 and overshoots by 23 percent finishes at $36,249 - still $6,073 below the NSW average. To reach $42,322 from a $29,471 starting budget requires an overshoot of $12,851, which is 43 percent above the starting figure rather than 23 percent. NSW couples either overshoot by more or start with a larger initial budget than the national one.

Matt Butterworth, founder and chief executive of Easy Weddings, described the 2026 market as "shaped by cost-conscious decision-making, but not diminished ambition." In NSW that ambition comes with the highest price tag in the country.

The practical consequence: any quote an NSW couple receives for a venue, a photographer or a caterer should be compared against $42,322, not $38,252. The national average will not tell you whether a Sydney venue is good or expensive value for your state.

Which spending decisions move the NSW figure most?

No published breakdown of wedding costs by category exists for NSW specifically. The national category averages - venue $17,518, catering $6,177 and photography at $3,657 - are the most granular data available, and they show that venue and catering together represent about 62 percent of the national total.

Those two lines are priced per head, which makes guest count the single lever that moves the total furthest. Ever After Weddings records the full per-guest cost of venue, catering and beverages between $180 and $300. On that band, cutting 20 guests from a NSW wedding saves between $3,600 and $6,000. That is more than the average photography spend of $3,657 and a larger single reduction than any negotiation on a fixed-cost item.

At 100 guests and $300 per head, venue and catering alone reach $30,000. That single line is already 71 percent of the NSW average before flowers, photography, music, the dress or the celebrant have been booked.

The three decisions worth the most attention in NSW, in order: the guest count, the venue, and whether to combine ceremony and reception at one site. Combining them removes the travel gap between ceremony end and reception start, which also removes the catering hold time and the extra lighting and styling costs that come with a second location.

Common questions about the average wedding cost in NSW

Is $42,322 what an NSW wedding actually costs? It is the 2026 average across NSW couples surveyed by Easy Weddings and reported by Forbes Australia. Your own number depends on your guest count, venue, and which categories you buy. $42,322 is the average finish, not a ceiling or a floor.

Why does NSW cost more than the national average? No published source breaks the NSW figure down by category, so the specific drivers of the gap are not attributable to a single line item. Venue is 46 percent of the national average. Venue costs in Sydney and the Hunter Valley vary widely from regional NSW, and that spread likely explains a meaningful portion of the state average.

Has the NSW average risen from last year? Yes. Easy Weddings put NSW at $38,566 in its 2025 report. Forbes Australia reported $42,322 for 2026, an increase of $3,756 or about 9.7 percent year on year - above the national rise of $2,937, or 8.3 percent.

How much per guest should an NSW couple budget? The published figure of $180 to $300 per head covers venue, catering and beverages and was reported for Australia overall in May 2026. For Sydney venues and Hunter Valley wineries, use the upper end of that band. For regional NSW, the lower end is a reasonable working figure.

Does the $42,322 average include the engagement ring? Easy Weddings includes a ring at $6,842 in its category breakdown, but the average total spend is not simply the sum of all categories. Not every couple includes the ring in the wedding budget. Price it separately.

Is $30,000 a realistic budget for an NSW wedding? It is close to the national starting budget of $29,471 and well below the NSW average of $42,322. At that level, a smaller guest count or a regional NSW venue brings it within reach. A Sydney venue at 100 guests will be difficult to hold to $30,000 on current pricing.

The one thing to do today

Set the guest count before booking anything. Venue and catering are the two largest lines on any NSW wedding budget and both are priced per head. Every other decision - which photographer, which florist, whether to have a band - happens within the ceiling the guest count sets. Fix that number first and the rest of the planning has a frame to work from.

Once the guest count is set, build the run sheet around it. A venue charged for a 5-hour booking that runs 6 hours because the schedule was not mapped out in advance is one of the easiest $1,000 to $2,000 costs to avoid.
