A wedding budget list has to be booked in the right sequence, or a $29,471 starting budget turns into a $38,252 final one. That 23 percent overshoot is what Easy Weddings' 2026 survey of Australian couples finds every year¹. Lock in the reception venue and catering first: together they are 62 percent of the total, and the wedding date depends on both. The eighteen lines below are ordered the way Australian couples actually book them, not the way a spreadsheet lists them.

Book these two before anything else

The reception venue averages $17,518 nationally and is 46 percent of the total wedding budget on its own, the single biggest line by a wide margin². It is also the line that decides the date: 92 percent of couples book a venue, and 23 percent set their wedding date around when their chosen venue is free². Nothing else on this list can be booked with confidence until this one is.

Catering follows straight after, at $6,177 nationally³, often through the venue itself and sometimes as a separate contract. Between them, venue and catering come to $23,695, close to two-thirds of the $38,252 national average. Get these two locked in and the rest of the list is smaller decisions against a number you already know.

Both lines are priced per head, which is the guest list working before you have written a single other line item. Australian couples plan for around 108 guests and land closer to 85 once budget pressure sets in²¹. Cut the list before you sign the venue contract and both of the two biggest lines move with it. Cut it after, and only catering does.

The next seven lines, once the date is set

With a venue and a date confirmed, the next wave books out over the following few months. Photography runs $3,657 nationally⁴, and a videographer, if you use one, adds $3,125⁵. A florist averages $2,639⁶, and styling or decor $2,849⁷. The dress runs $2,591⁸, hired furniture and props $2,203⁹, and music, whether a DJ or a live act, $2,142¹⁰.

Styling is the one line on this stretch that most couples skip: only 20 percent hire a professional stylist, against 54 percent who style the wedding themselves and 16 percent who leave it to the venue⁷. Put a number against it before you decide, not after - the $2,849 average is what it costs if you do buy it, not a cost every couple carries.

Venue and catering booked first come to $23,695. The four final-month lines combined come to $3,353.

Formal wear, the legal notice, and the optional planner line

Formal wear for the wedding party averages $2,102¹¹, cars $1,223¹², and a marriage celebrant $1,031¹³. Invitations run $1,001 nationally¹⁴, usually ordered once the guest list is close to final.

One line here has no dollar figure but a hard deadline: the Notice of Intended Marriage must reach your celebrant no earlier than 18 months and no later than 1 month before the wedding, under section 42 of the Marriage Act 1961²⁰. Put it on the list anyway. It is the one item that legally cannot slip past its own date.

The final-month costs that catch people out

Four lines land in the last few weeks and rarely make it onto an early budget: a photobooth at $1,038, which exactly half of couples book¹⁶; hair and makeup at $992¹⁷; bomboniere at $678¹⁸; and the cake at $645¹⁹. Together they come to $3,353, less than a sixth of what venue and catering cost on their own.

That is not a reason to ignore them. It is a reason to budget them in month one instead of discovering them in month eleven, when there is less room left to move. None of the four need booking early - a photobooth operator, a hair and makeup artist and a bomboniere order can all be confirmed a few months out - but the dollar figure belongs on the list from day one, sitting next to the venue and catering lines rather than showing up as a surprise once the bigger decisions are already spent.

Add every line and you get $50,411, well above the $38,252 average wedding. That gap is not an error - videographer, professional stylist and planner are all lines a meaningful share of couples skip entirely, and each average only counts the couples who bought it. Read the table as a menu, not a bill: tick the lines you will actually pay for, and the total lands much closer to the real number.
