A wedding day emergency kit list keeps about 30 items across four run sheet phases - getting ready, the ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception. The cost of assembling it is under $50 in total. The cost of not having the right item at the right moment is typically the price of the garment it ruins, the delay it causes, or both.

Getting ready Reception Cocktail hour Ceremony 14 7 5 4

The getting-ready phase carries most of the kit weight - 14 of the 30 items belong there because clothing, hair and makeup combine in a tight window with multiple people. The ceremony needs only 4 items, cocktail hour 5, and the reception 7. That distribution tells you how to pack and where each bag should be at handover.

Who carries what

Three bags, not one. The couple can carry almost nothing during the ceremony and reception - formal wear rarely has pockets, and handing off a bag during photos means it may not return before the next moment it is needed.

The practical split:

  1. Couple's kit - eight items, given to the lead attendant for the day
  2. Bridal party bag - six getting-ready items, stays at the venue
  3. Reception cache - seven items, moved to a venue bathroom shelf before the ceremony begins

If your bridal party is small, merge kits 1 and 2. See the closing section if you have a day-of coordinator.

Getting ready: 14 items (ceremony minus 4 hours)

The run sheet template structures the getting-ready block as the longest phase of the day. Pack these the night before and hand them to the right person before anyone leaves home.

Couple's kit - 8 items, travels with the lead attendant

ItemWhat it solves
Safety pins, assorted sizes x 10Broken zip, snapped strap, loose hem
Double-sided fashion tape, full rollPlunging necklines, floating fabric panels
Sewing kit with white, ivory and navy threadPopped button, torn seam
Stain remover penCoffee, lipstick, food dropped at breakfast
Clear nail polishRuns in stockings, loose sequins or beads
Breath mints, two packetsCeremony close-ups and every moment after
Straws, fourDrinking water without smearing lip colour
Portable phone charger, fully chargedThe run sheet generator runs on someone's phone all day

Bridal party bag - 6 items, stays at the venue

ItemWhat it solves
Bobby pins, 50 minimumHair that shifts under ceremony nerves
Hair ties, sixOne per person with two spare
Hairspray, travel sizeTouch-ups between getting ready and ceremony photos
Blotting papers, twenty sheetsShine control through a long warm day
Powder compactTop-up after blotting
Deodorant stickHeat, nerves, and four hours of dancing later

Ceremony: 4 items (30-45 minutes)

The ceremony kit must fit in a small clutch or be held by the celebrant's assistant. The run sheet template keeps the ceremony tight - typically 30 to 45 minutes - and transitions directly into the family photo block.2 Four items that can be passed off in under five seconds:

  • Handkerchief or tissues, two of each (for tears - bring more than you think you need)
  • Spare earring backs, four (a loose back is a minor panic that is preventable)
  • Ibuprofen or paracetamol, four tablets (back pain from heels, tension headache from emotion)
  • Breath mints, one more packet

Cocktail hour: 5 items (60-90 minutes)

The cocktail hour is the longest standing window of the day, and the phase where feet begin to complain in earnest. The bridal party bag moves to the cocktail location at this point. Add these five items to it:

  • Blister plasters, at least eight (two per person in heels, pack more if the venue has cobblestones)
  • Lip balm (ceremony air conditioning and open-air venues both dry lips out)
  • Sunscreen SPF 30, travel size (afternoon outdoor light in Australian spring and autumn peaks in UV)
  • Insect repellent spray, travel size (garden venues from November through March)
  • Second stain remover pen (the first one may have been used during getting ready)

Reception: 7 items (five or more hours)

The reception runs longer than any other phase of the day. Before the ceremony begins, move these seven items to a bathroom shelf at the venue where they remain accessible throughout the night:

ItemWhat it solves
Flat shoes or ballet flatsFeet swell across the day; heels become optional by 8pm
Blister plasters, eight moreReplenish what the cocktail hour used
Antacid tabletsRich food, champagne, and a long emotional day
Snack bars, fourCouples frequently do not eat at their own receptions
Super glue or gem-tack, small tubeA loose stone before the first dance
Second portable chargerSpeeches run long; so do phones
Small compact umbrellaExit photos happen after dry days too

The wedding planning checklist covers the full pre-wedding task sequence. Packing this kit is the last item on that list - do it the night before, when you still have time to find what is missing.

US couples hire an average of 13 vendors for one wedding day.1 Each of those vendors benefits from a copy of the run sheet. The kit is what keeps the schedule intact when something goes sideways between the rows on that sheet.

FAQ

What should be in a wedding day emergency kit?

A thorough wedding day emergency kit list covers four categories: clothing and appearance (safety pins, fashion tape, stain remover, clear nail polish, blotting papers, powder compact), health and comfort (pain relief, antacid, blister plasters, lip balm), logistics (portable charger, breath mints, straws), and environment (sunscreen, insect repellent, flat shoes, small umbrella). Organize by run sheet phase so the right items are at the right location at the right time.

Who should carry the emergency kit at a wedding?

Three people carry different parts of it. The lead attendant holds the couple's eight-item personal kit. A second bag with six items stays at the venue for the bridal party. A third cache of seven items moves to the venue bathroom shelf before the ceremony. The couple carries almost nothing - formal wear rarely has pockets.

When should you pack the wedding emergency kit?

The night before, not the morning of. The morning of is when you discover what is missing and the pharmacy is either closed or across town. Pack it when you finalize the run sheet, so you are checking the schedule and the kit at the same time.

How many items does a wedding emergency kit need?

Around 30 items covers a typical wedding with a bridal party and multiple venue moves across the day. The couple's personal kit is only eight items. If you have a small elopement with no bridal party, the eight-item couple's kit plus blister plasters and flat shoes covers what most eloping couples need.

Does a day-of coordinator have their own emergency kit?

Yes, and most carry a substantial one. Ask at your final walkthrough what they bring - fashion tape, stain remover, pain relief and sewing supplies are nearly universal among working coordinators. A coordinator's kit typically covers everything in the couple's personal kit and most of the bridal party bag. Map what they carry against this list before you pack.

Who this is not for

If you have a full-service or day-of coordinator, ask what they carry before building the kit from scratch. Most couples with a coordinator need only the ceremony pocket of four items - the coordinator's kit handles the rest.

If you are eloping with no bridal party, cut this list to the eight-item couple's kit, blister plasters, flat shoes, and a compact umbrella. Approximately 20 items rather than 30, and all of them fit in a medium handbag.
