Wedding Day Timeline for a 5pm Ceremony
A wedding day timeline for a 5pm ceremony: getting ready at 1:00 PM, reception at 8:00 PM, send-off at 1:00 AM. One typed field, twelve rows back.

A wedding day timeline for a 5pm ceremony ends at 1:00 AM. Type 5:00 PM into the ceremony field and twelve rows come back: getting ready at 1:00 PM, guests arriving at 4:30 PM, the reception opening at 8:00 PM, and the send-off at 1:00 AM - the full day from one typed time.

Three phases anchored to one ceremony time: morning opens at 1:00 PM, reception at 8:00 PM.
The generator pre-fills the ceremony field at 3:00 PM, not 5:00 PM. Type 5:00 PM and all twelve rows shift forward by two hours. Four problems follow the shift, and each has a typed fix.
Problem 1: The send-off lands at 1:00 AM
The five-hour reception from 8:00 PM puts the send-off at 1:00 AM by default. Most venues have a curfew before that - midnight is the common ceiling for noise restrictions in residential areas.
The fix is a typed end time. Put the venue's cut-off in the day-ends field and the send-off moves to that time instead. Reception rows compress equally: an 11:30 PM curfew puts the first dance at 10:00 PM and speeches at 9:00 PM, dinner at 8:45 PM holds.
Problem 2: Four hours to get ready
Getting ready opens at 1:00 PM, four hours before the ceremony. That is the minimum the generator assumes, not a recommendation. A couple on their own can manage it. A full party with eight people across hair and makeup in one location needs closer to six or seven hours.
Put your real start time in the preparation field and the ceremony stays at 5:00 PM - the morning reorganises around the time you typed rather than around the ceremony. The authored classic scenario runs from 7:30 AM over twenty rows before the ceremony and is the better starting point for a large party.
Problem 3: The afternoon sits empty
Family photos land at 5:30 PM. The reception opens at 8:00 PM. Between them is two and a half hours with one row in it - the arrangement move at 7:00 PM. For a single-venue event that gap is dead time, and guests standing around for two hours before they are seated is one of the few things that runs longer than planned.
A canape hour fills it. Type 6:00 PM into the canape field and the afternoon reorganises: canapes at 6:00 PM, couple portraits at 6:45 PM, flower arrangements moved at 7:00 PM, reception still at 8:00 PM - because it now derives from canape hour plus two hours, not ceremony plus three.
The 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM span: blank without a canape hour, filled with one at 6:00 PM.
Try the generator with 5:00 PM Type it into the run sheet generator and add a canape hour. The afternoon fills in.
Problem 4: Light in winter
In Sydney in June, golden hour starts at 4:16 PM and sunset is at 4:54 PM.1 A 5:00 PM ceremony starts six minutes after sunset, and the family photos at 5:30 PM happen in the dark. Jordan at Managing Matrimony writes that "a 3pm ceremony in winter means no golden hour. Shift to 4pm."2 A 5:00 PM ceremony in winter does not get past that problem by starting later; it puts the whole evening behind it.
From roughly October through March, Sydney's sun is still up past 7:00 PM, which puts the two-and-a-half-hour gap between photos and the reception entirely in usable light. That window is where golden-hour portraits sit in summer, and it makes the 5pm start worth the later finish in those months.
Check sunset for your date before locking in 5:00 PM. If it falls before 5:30 PM, move the ceremony an hour earlier. If it falls after 6:30 PM, a 5pm ceremony gives you ceremony light, portrait light in the gap, and a reception that starts after dark.
Sydney in June: sunset at 4:54 PM, six minutes before the 5:00 PM ceremony.
Common questions about a 5pm ceremony
What time does a 5pm wedding finish? 1:00 AM by default, five hours after the 8:00 PM reception. Type your venue's curfew in the day-ends field and that time is used instead.
What time should getting ready start for a 5pm ceremony? 1:00 PM is the floor the generator assumes. For a full party, type your real start time in the preparation field - the ceremony stays at 5:00 PM.
What time does the reception start at a 5pm ceremony? 8:00 PM by default, three hours after the ceremony. Type a 6:00 PM canape hour and the reception still lands at 8:00 PM - it derives from canapes plus two hours.
Is 5pm too late for a winter ceremony? In Sydney in June, yes. Sunset is at 4:54 PM - the ceremony starts after dark. A 4:00 PM ceremony covers the light window better.12
How long is the gap between a 5pm ceremony and the reception? Two and a half hours by default. Add a canape hour at 6:00 PM and that gap becomes structured rather than empty. We looked at the gap itself in how long between the ceremony and the reception.
Who this is not for
A 5:00 PM start is the wrong fit if the wedding is in winter in southern Australia (sunset falls before the ceremony), if the venue closes before midnight (a 4:00 PM ceremony with an 8:00 PM reception serves an early curfew better), or if the bridal party is large enough that 1:00 PM feels tight for hair and makeup.
For those situations, the 3pm ceremony timeline starts four hours earlier and finishes at 11:00 PM. If the ceremony time itself is still undecided, what time should my wedding ceremony start takes that from the other direction.
